Caring for the three tools in the grooming kit
A wooden comb, a bristle palm brush and steel scissors will last if they stay dry. Here is how to clean each tool and what ruins the set.
The Beard Grooming Kit comes with three tools: an oval boar bristle brush with a wooden body, a wooden dual sided comb, and small stainless steel scissors. None of these pieces are complicated, but two are wood and natural fiber. Water ruins them faster than daily use. Understanding how to wash, dry, and store each one prevents warped timber, split teeth, and blunt edges.
Cleaning the boar bristle brush begins by removing trapped hair with your fingers or a comb. Wash only the bristles with a drop of mild soap and warm water, keeping the wooden back as dry as possible. Do not soak the brush in a basin. Because the oval body has no handle to hang it from, rest it flat on a dry towel with the bristles facing down so moisture drains away from the wood.
Washing the wooden comb requires a quick wipe rather than a bath. Run warm water over the teeth, clear the lint, and dry it immediately with a cloth. Leaving a wooden comb damp softens the grain and leads to split teeth that snag hair later. A light rub with a drop of beard oil once in a while keeps the wood from drying out and cracking.
Scissors demand a different sort of discipline. The stainless steel blades only need a wipe with a clean cloth after trimming, followed by an occasional wipe with rubbing alcohol to clear away product residue. What ruins small grooming shears is using them on anything other than beard hair. Cutting paper, thread, cardboard, or tape burrs the cutting edges and ruins the alignment of the looped handles.
Storage finishes the routine. Once everything is completely dry, five items go into the included drawstring storage bag: the oil, the balm, the brush, the comb, and the scissors. Packing wet wooden tools into that enclosed space traps humidity and breeds mildew. Let the brush and comb air out on a counter first before sliding them into the pouch with the rest of the kit.
